Cope-Williams

Eager to start our close to home Macedon Ranges Wine Week, we jumped in the car and took off.

By took off, I mean: procrastinate packing in the morning, search the house for enough clean clothes and underwear for 5 days, end up packing way too much (because when you’re taking a car, why not ‘just throw that in too’), forget we needed more dog food, fill up with petrol, make coffee for the Keep Cups, then drive away. Only to turn back a block later to grab said Keep Cups... and a charger cord.

Starting off strong team.

Melbourne was turning it on, for a glorious sunny day, which, when driving into Cope Williams’ charming property, sun over the yet-to-wake-up-vines, we were straight into holiday mode!

We were greeted with the full range on tasting, from sparkling bruts, splendid blended reds (just don’t call it a sparkling shiraz!), pinots, chardonnays, cab-merlot and dessert wine, which on advice pairs best on top of vanilla bean ice cream (we’ll come back on this).

The cellar door experience was relaxed, full of dry-witty banter and informative. Not having spent time in the area before, we chatted through the varietals on the property, the story and experience of the winery, and of course the local advice on where to visit throughout the region.

Fun Fact: Cope-Williams is home to one of the (very) few Royal Tennis Courts in Australia (or Real Tennis Courts for the purists playing along at home). While there was no visit from M during our visit, Prince Edward (we assume along with a large number of MI6 agents) played on the court in April as part of his journey to play on all 48 real courts in the world.

Definitely worth a visit if you’re perusing and/or cruising through the area.

How many bottles did we buy: 6 [we do always get excited at the first stop]
